Book Review: By Her Own Design by Piper Huguley

⭐⭐⭐⭐

4.5/5 Stars

"An Excellent choice for Black History Month"

If you're looking for a great book to read during Black History Month, I highly recommend By Her Own Design by Piper Huguley.

One of my favorite parts of this novel is the opening. In fact, I have read the first section at least three different times. Huguley gives a master class in how to write an Act 1. From the very beginning, she pulls the reader into the story and makes you want to keep turning pages.

One criticism I had is that the book reads more like it was written to be a movie adaptation than a novel.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but the story centers around a Black-owned business and the challenges that come with sabotage and success. The stakes are clear, the characters are engaging, and the story keeps moving forward.

Another thing I enjoyed was the way the novel moves between two timelines. Huguley handles it very well. The transitions are easy to follow, and both timelines add depth to the story.

If you enjoy historical fiction with strong characters, meaningful themes, and excellent storytelling, then this book is for you.

For a good time, check out By Her Own Design by Piper Huguley. It earns a 4.5 out 5 stars from me.
